History

The name Teddy Bear comes from former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was "Teddy". The name originated from an incident on a bear-hunting trip in Mississippi in November 1902, to which Roosevelt was invited by Mississippi Governor Andrew H.Longino . There were several other hunters competing, and most of them had already killed an animal. A suite of Roosevelt's attendants, led by Hplt Collier, cornered, clubbed, and tied an american Black Bear to a willow tree after a long exhausting chase with hounds. They called Roosevelt to the site and suggested that he should shoot it. He refused to shoot the bear himself, deeming this unsportsmanlike, but instructed that the bear be killed to put it out of its misery, and it became the topic of a Political cartoon by Clifford Berryman in The Washington Post on November 16, 1902.

Morris Michtom saw the drawing of Roosevelt and the bear cub and was inspired to create a new toy. He created a little stuffed bear cub and put it in his shop window with a sign that read "Teddy's bear," after sending the bear to Roosevelt and receiving permission to sell the bears. The toys were an immediate success and Michtom founded the Idea Novelty and Toy Co., which still exists today.

At the same time, in Germany the Steiff firm, unaware of Michtom's bear, produced a stuffed bear from Richard Steiff's designs. They exhibited the toy at the Leipzig Toy Fair in March 1903 and exported 3000 to the United States.

By 1906 manufacturers other than Michtom and Steiff had joined in and the craze for Teddy Bears was such that ladies carried them everywhere, children were photographed with them, and Roosevelt used one as a mascot in his bid for re-election.

American educator Symou Eatonwrote the children's book series The Roosevelt Bears, while composer John Bratton wrote "The Teddy Bear Two Step" which, with the addition of Jimmy Kennedy's lyrics, became the song "The Teddy Bears's Picnic".

Production

Commercially-made, mass-produced teddy bears are predominantly made as toys for children. These bears have safety joints for attaching arms, legs, and heads. They must have securely fastened eyes that do not pose a choking hazard for small children. These "plush" bears must meet a rigid standard of construction in order to be marketed to children in the United States and in the European Union.

There are also companies, like steiff, that sell handmade collectible bears that can be purchased in stores or over the Internet.

The majority of teddy bears are manufactured in countries such as China and Indonesia. A few small, single-person producers in the United States make unique, non-mass produced teddy bears. One of the oldest remaining American manufacturers that produces "Made in the USA" teddy bears is Stuffington Bear Factory, open since 1959.

Mohair, the fur shorn or combed from a breed of long haired goats, is woven into cloth, dyed and trimmed. Alpaca teddy bears are made from the pelt of an alpaca because the fiber is too soft to weave. In addition to mohair and alpaca, there is a huge selection of "plush" or synthetic fur made for the teddy bear market. Both these types of fur are commercially produced.

Some teddy bear artists specialize in the production of bears made from recycled materials. These artists hunt thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales and trash collection centers as well as their own and their families' basements and attics in search of forgotten treasures to be turned into a collector's dream. Old quilts, dresses, fur collars, coats and stoles as well as beaded bags and garments are quickly transformed into stunning teddy bears.

Some teddy bear artists specialize in crochet bears made out of thread. For these bears artists do not use fabric; they make the fabric crocheting and at the same time make the bear. Thread crochet bears are fully-jointed, miniature bears. They may be made out of crochet cotton thread; Perle cotton thread; Mohair thread; Punch thread; some thin fancy yarn, like eyelash; or any other fiber.

Populality

Retail sales of stuffed plush animals including teddy bears was $1.3 billion in 2006. The most commonly sold brands include Gund and Ty Inc. Brands associated with teddy bears that enjoyed strong popularity in the 1980s and 1990's are Teddy Ruxpin and Care Bears.

Teddy bears have seen a resurgence in popularity as national "do-it-yourself" chains have opened. Among the largest and best-known are Build-A-Bear Workshop and Vermont Teddy Bear company. Some popular mass-marketed teddy bears made today include Rupert, Sooty, Paddington, and Pudsey Bear. Books have also been written with the teddy bear featured as their main character. These include Winnie-the-Pooh, Corduroy, Teddy Tells Time, and Teddy Dressing.

With the ever-growing popularity of social networking websites, an increasing number of teddy bear owners are uploading photographs of their teddy bears' adventures and travels to sites such as Facebook, Myspace and the teddy-bears-only blogging website The Bear Club.

Teddy Bear Museum

The world's first Teddy Bear Museum was set up in Petersfield, Hampshire, England, in 1984. In 1990, a similar foundation was set up in Naples, Florida, United States. These were closed in 2006, and 2005 respectively, and the bears sold by auction.

Teddy Bear Cop

Because police, fire and emergency officials found that giving a teddy bear to a child during a crisis stabilized them, NAPLC created the Teddy Bear Cops program to distribute teddy bears to police, fire and emergency officials throughout the United States, for their use in providing teddy bears to children in emergency situations.

Report about the relation between the internet and the library.
( Access toLibrary and information system)

Abstract:

This report will process further investigation on the difference between the internet and the conventional library. It will give a short insight into the defintion of each, reveal short piecewise functionality of each as well as conclude in direct comparison.

Sub Topics:
Internet

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standardized Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless connections, and other technologies. The Internet carries a vast array of information resources and services, most notably the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic mail. In addition it supports popular services such as online chat, file transfer and file sharing, gaming, commerce, social networking, publishing, video on demand, and teleconferencing and telecommunications. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications allow person-to-person communication via voice and video.

Library

A library is a collection of sources, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. In the more traditional sense, a library is a collection of books. It can mean the collection, the building or room that houses such a collection, or both. The term "library" has itself acquired a secondary meaning: "a collection of useful material for common use," and in this sense is used in fields such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, electronics and biology.

Introduction: This report will briefly report the differences or even the things in common between the library and the internet.

Body:I'm sure that most people who have any sense of how to research on the Internet would agree that the Internet is a much easier and shorter process. Although it still does require a lot of searching through different articles to find exactly what you are looking for, it gives you the ability to do all of your research from sitting in one spot. When doing research in a library, you are forced to first find books that you are looking for, write down their locations, and then go searching for them through the aisles of the library. You must then gather them all up and read through them, trying to find relevant information. And then, to keep track of this information, you must either check the books out or make copies of the pages that interest you. When you use the Internet, it is much more convenient. You simply type in keywords or phrases and you are given numerous articles and sites that relate to your topic. When you find something that you want to save, you can use diigo, or other similar programs, to bookmark your article, in which it will save it for you so you can go back to it. You also have the ability to make comments about the article, or highlight important lines, which you can keep private or make public for other viewers. There are some programs, such as Zotero, that will even write the bibliography for you, as opposed to writing all of the information down by hand in a traditional library setting. Online programs, such as Zotero, can save a significant amount of time, especially if you hate doing bibliographies, such as myself. There is even the option of taking part in social bookmarking in which you can find articles related to your topic that others have already bookmarked and read their comments about them. You also have the convenience of having all of your information in one spot as well as being accessible, which can be very helpful when writing a research paper. As one can see, there are many advatages to searching on the internet, as opposed to in a traditional library setting. Efe Iguariede.

Conclusion: The library use the system of the internert which provide to all user who come to use the service of the library to search for the information use.

Exercise 4

1.When can you find information about Noble Prize? Who get the Noble Prize this year?

The Nobel Prize Internet Archive is fully interactive. If you have an interesting and useful Internet link about a particular Nobel Laureate, you can add your link instantly to that laureate's home page here at the Archive. We encourage you to add links as often as you like. The educational value of this Archive depends on contributions and resourcefulness its users. Want to try it out? No one.

2.Go to Encyclopedia Online at http://librery.spu.ac.th Search for the history of automobiles or computer. Summarize the information you get.

The history of the automobile did not just begin with Henry Ford and the Model T, as you may believe. In fact, Henry Ford is not even regarded as the inventor of the modern automobile. A German engineer, Carl Benz, is generally considered the inventor of modern automobiles, although his invention used engines and other parts invented by numerous others who were working on the concept at the same time. The automobile was not the creation of a single inventor; the path to the modern automobile actually begins centuries ago in theoretical drawings by Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, and their contemporaries. The first vehicles capable of carrying people were actually steam-powered, and in existence by the beginning of the nineteenth century. It is during this era that hand brakes, transmissions, and steering mechanisms, among other automobile components, were developed. Most of these developments came in the UK, but in response to worries about dangerously high speeds, an 1865 act required such vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot with a flag and a horn. This effectively curtailed automobile development there for several decades.
3.What is the difference between general book and reference book?

Reference Book in a library is one that may only be used in the library and not borrowed from the library. Many such books are reference works (in the first sense) which are usually used only briefly or photocopied from, and therefore do not need to be borrowed. Keeping them in the library assures that they will always be available for use on demand. Other reference-only books are ones that are too valuable to permit borrowers to take them out. Reference-only items may be shelved in a reference collection located separately from circulating items or individual reference-only items may be shelved among items available for borrowing.
General books are books available on the library. Bookstore and ect ... to read books of all ages.
4.When do you need to search information from the reference collection?

When i'm work and study.

5.What type of reference collection that you like to use most? and Why?

1.What is the difference between journal and a magazine?

Scholarly Journal:

A scholarly journal contains original research articles by people who are experts in a particular field and who share their research with other professionals in order to stimulate discussion and debate. The articles are first “peer reviewed,” that is, there is always an editorial board which will critique each article for professional content and integrity. The articles are based on research done by the author and usually contain an abstract (a summary of the article) and a bibliography. The scholarly journal is published by professional organizations such as the American Psychological Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Reading Association, the American Society of Animal Science, the Modern Language Association, or by leading scholarly publishing houses such as Haworth Press, Sage Publications, Pergamon Press, Elsevier, etc. Scholarly journals are usually published monthly or quarterly.

Examples Of Scholarly Journals:

-Journal of Early Adolescence Journal of American History

-Social Problems Families in Society

3. What is the call number access the library website?

A call number is a group of numbers and/or letters put together to tell you where in the library
to find your book.
A call number is located at the bottom of the book on the spine. It helps you to find your books quicker.Once you've got your call number from the card catalog, it's time to go find your book!

This is where a call number is located:

Here's something to remember:
Don't let it confuse you, but just because it's a call number doesn't mean it has numbers! Some call numbers are made up of letters. We'll show you some examples later.

4. What are sources of knowledge? Identify as much as you know.

Inspiration, revelation, insight, intuition, ecstasy, divine sight and the supreme, blissful state are the seven planes of knowledge. There are four sources of knowledge: instinct, reason, intuition, and direct knowledge of Brahman (God) or Brahma-Jnana (knowledge of God).
InstinctWhen an ant crawls on your right arm, the left hand automatically moves towards the right arm to drive the ant away. The mind does not reason here. When you see a scorpion near your leg, you withdraw the leg automatically. This is called instinctive or automatic movement. As you cross a street, how instinctively you move your body to save yourself from the cars! There is no thought during such kind of mechanical movement.

Instinct is found in animals and birds also. In birds, the ego does not interfere with the free, divine flow and play. Hence the work done by them through their instinct is more perfect than that done by human beings. Have you ever noticed the intricate and exquisite work done by birds in the building of their beautiful nests ?

Reason Reason is higher than instinct and is found only in human beings. It collects facts, generalizes, reasons out from cause to effect, from effect to cause, from premises to conclusions, from propositions to proofs. It concludes, decides and comes to final judgment. It takes you safely to the door of intuition and leaves you there.

Belief, reason, knowledge and faith are the four important psychic processes. First you have belief in a doctor. You go to him for diagnosis and treatment. The doctor makes a thorough examination of you and prescribes certain medicines. You take them. You reason out: "Such and such is the disease. The doctor has given me some iron and iodide. Iron will improve my blood. The iodide will stimulate the lymphatics and absorb the exudation and growth in the liver. So I should take it.

Then, by a regular and systematic course of these drugs, the disease is cured in a month. You then get knowledge and have perfect faith in the efficacy of the medicine and the proficiency of the doctor. You recommend this doctor and his drugs to your friends so that they too might benefit from his treatment.
IntuitionIntuition is personal spiritual experience. The knowledge obtained through the functioning of the causal body (Karana Sarira) is intuition. Sri Aurobindo calls it the Supermind or Supramental Consciousness. There is direct perception of truth, or immediate knowledge through Samadhi or the Superconscious State. You know things in a flash.

Professor Bergson preached about intuition in France to make the people understand that there was a higher source of knowledge than the intellect.
In intuition there is no reasoning process at all. It is direct perception. Intuition transcends reason but does not contradict it. Intellect takes a man to the door of intuition and returns. Intuition is Divya Drishti (divine vision); it is the eye of wisdom. Spiritual flashes and glimpses of truth, inspiration, revelation and spiritual insight come through intuition.

The mind has to be pure for one to know that it is the intuition that is functioning at a particular moment.
Brahma-Jnana (knowledge of God) is above intuition. It transcends the causal body and is the highest form of knowledge. It is the only Reality.

5. What do you read this week.
Islandwide clean-up this weekend

Published on: 9/14/2009
.
by HEATHER-LYNN EVANSON

AN ALL-OUT CAMPAIGN against litter and garbage will be waged over the weekend when the Future Centre Trust and the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the Ministry of the Environment stage clean-ups around the island.
More than 400 volunteers will descend on beaches, highways, byways and gullies from Long Beach in Christ Church to Smuttons Bay in Clinketts, St Lucy. for the campaign.
Nicole Garofano, of the Future Centre Trust, who is co-ordinating Clean Up Barbados, said so far 460 people had volunteered, while 14 companies had made donations to the cause.
She added a contingent from the Barbados Defence Force was also supposed to join the clean-up.

"Our aim is to raise the profile of waste management in Barbados - how much trash is actually out there in Barbados' environment both from our creation and that which was accumulated from offshore areas," she explained.
This is the first time the Future Centre Trust had initiated such a clean-up and Garofano said they had tried to get communities interested in the campaign.

"We're trying to offer it to any community that might notice somewhere that needs cleaning - it can be a gully, a beach, a pasture - any area they feel need attention," she explained.
Role
Garofano further explained the Future Centre Trust would be working with the EPD, even though the EPD's clean-up has the role of specifically gathering information for International Coastal Clean Up Day.

"Our Clean Up Barbados is about weighing yes, but more about cleaning," Garofano said.

Meanwhile, the EPD will be cleaning Morgan Lewis beach, in St Andrew and data about the type and weight of the litter removed will be used in its National Marine Litter Monitoring programme.

Other beaches earmarked for clean-up that weekend are Long Beach, Christ Church, Browne's Beach, St Michael and Cattlewash, St. Joseph; while Jack-in-the-Box gully in St Thomas and Blackman's gully in St Joseph will also be cleaned.
